Renoir & Love

For the National Gallery's exhibition Renoir & Love, we created a film exploring the first twenty years of Renoir's career, from his bohemian beginnings in Montmartre to his most celebrated Impressionist paintings.

Filmed on location in Paris, we took inspiration from Renoir's own working process. Just as he frequently turned to the people closest to him as models, we brought together our friends and family, with much of our crew also stepping in front of the camera, to recreate the fleeting gestures, glances and everyday interactions captured in his paintings.

To bring the Paris of Renoir's time to life, we delved into the collections of the Musée de Montmartre and historic photographic archives, including the remarkable work of Charles Marville documenting the city's transformation under Haussmann. Alongside these glimpses into the past, we took to the streets to capture real, unscripted moments of love and connection, drawing parallels between Renoir's world and our own.

Almost 150 years later, the city and its fashions may have changed, but the intimate human moments he chose to paint remain remarkably modern.
